Colin Lee: Queer & Trans Music Therapy
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, music therapists have closely worked with gay, bisexual, and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This work has formed the historical backdrop for the development and proposal of LGBTQIA+ best practice guidelines in music therapy and subsequently the introduction of the new theoretical framework Queer Music Therapy. In the last several years, there has been increasing interest in LGBTQIA+-focused music therapy, and a burgeoning of academic research discourse that has led to a surge of journal articles, books, and scholarly work. This presentation will offer an overview of the presenter’s current work as editor for The Oxford Handbook of Queer and Trans Music Therapy.
